Naming Facilities

The DeKalb County Board of Education is responsible for the naming and renaming of all facilities and portions of
facilities, including, but not limited to, schools, buildings, wings, grounds, stadiums, athletic fields, annexes, media
centers, and rooms. While the final decision on naming rests with the Board, the Board recognizes that the official
name selected for a facility or portion of a facility is an important factor in the public image of the community.
Therefore, the Board welcomes public involvement in these important decisions.
The Superintendent shall enact administrative regulations for the naming and renaming of facilities and portions of
facilities and the selection of school colors and mascots, to be implemented whenever any of the following situations
occur:
   1. A new school is scheduled to open;
   2. A school’s program or grade structure changes substantially;

   3. The makeup of a school’s student population changes substantially due to school closures, school
      consolidation, or rezoning; or
   4. Members of the community or District staff propose that a facility or portion of a facility be named or renamed
      to commemorate an individual or event.
Unless waived by the Board, a facility may not be named for a living individual or an individual who has been
deceased less than five years. The naming of a portion of a facility is not subject to this restriction but due care
should be exercised to ensure the integrity of the honoree.
