Request: It is requested that the Board of Education approve the allocated funds by DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis-Johnson in the amount of $25,000, to go to (5) specific schools in District 5. Arabia Mountain High School, Lithonia High School, Miller Grove High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, and Redan High School, at $5,000 per marching band.
Why: Arabia Mountain High School, Lithonia High School, Miller Grove High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, and Redan High School are each requesting to accept the $5,0000 funding allocated by DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis-Johnson, to be used specifically for youth violence prevention aimed at attracting more students to join the band program, as to provide an alternative to engaging in youth violence.
Details: DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis-Johnson has allocated funding in the amount of $25,000, to go to (5) schools in District 5, Arabia Mountain High School, Lithonia High School, Miller Grove High School, Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, and Redan High School, at $5,000 per marching band. Dear Dr. Marcia Oglesby,

As DeKalb County Presiding Officer and Commissioner for District 5, I am writing to inform you that I
have allocated $25,000 from District 5’s reserve, and the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners have
approved a grant totaling $25,000 to support marching band programs at five DeKalb County Schools
within District 5. Each school will receive $5,000 to enhance their programs.

The schools receiving this funding are:
   • Arabia Mountain High School
   • Lithonia High School
   • Miller Grove High School
   • Martin Luther King, Jr. High School
   • Redan High School

This funding is specifically allocated for youth violence prevention initiatives and aims to increase
student participation in the band programs, providing a positive alternative to youth violence.
