            Academic Skills Centers: What are our goals?
Goal # 1
• To provide academic supports in the form of double dosing during the school day that does not disrupt core
  content areas
Goal #2
• For students to gain confidence, develop study and practice habits, and learn critical skills to achieve
  and maintain grade level proficiency in math and/or literacy/language arts

                Academic Skills Centers: What are they?
• Academic Skill Centers provide focused, small group tutoring in math and/or literacy/language arts with
  added support for executive functioning skills.
• Academic support sessions are 30-minutes with trained tutors during the school day.
• Students engage in tutoring/academic support sessions during a non-core learning period.
• Academic Skill Centers (ASC) are defined centers located within twenty elementary and middle school
  Horizon sites.

                                                       Elementary, middle, and high school students

                                                       Note: Horizon schools are categorized based on academic
                                                       criteria designated by Georgia Department of Education
                                                       (GADOE) or DeKalb County School District (DCSD). Please be
                                                       advised that the list is subject to change based on updated
                                                       criteria from the GADOE.




     Note: High schools will launch in 2024 – 2025.                                                         4
    Academic Skills Centers: What are the eligibility requirements?




                                         Students between the 26th and 50th percentile on the
                                         fall Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and/or by low
                                         performance in the specific domain focus areas (ELA
                                         and/or Math)

Academic Skills Centers: What is the projected budget?

                Academic Skills Centers: What are our next steps?
•   Identify eligible scholars
•   Post tutor positions
•   Partner with principals to hire tutors
•   Collaborate with the Communications Department to develop the
    communication campaign
•   Select an instructional intervention tool
•   Collaborate with MTSS specialists to establish the framework for
    progress monitoring, data collection, and targeted
    instruction/invention supports
•   Finalize a professional development plan for tutors, teachers, MTSS
    specialists, and leaders
•   Furnish the new Academic Skills Centers
•   Partner with DIIT address technology needs
