As mandated by federal and state law, every school in the DeKalb County School District shall prepare a school safety plan to help curb the growing incidence of violence in schools, to respond effectively to such incidents, and to provide a safe learning environment for its children, teachers, and other school personnel. This plan also shall address preparedness for natural disasters, hazardous materials or radiological accidents, acts of violence, acts of terrorism and student transportation.
School safety plans shall be prepared with input from students enrolled in that school, parents or legal guardians of such students, teachers in that school, community leaders, other school employees and District employees, and local law enforcement, fire service, public safety, and emergency management agencies. Moreover, these plans shall be reviewed and, if necessary, updated annually and shall be submitted to the local emergency management agency.
In addition to the above mandates, the Superintendent or his or her designee is authorized to develop detailed procedures and protocols for responding to various natural and man-made emergencies and related events. These procedures and protocols are available to school officials electronically and/or in hard-copy formats.
