Board Policy JGC: Student Health Services

The DeKalb County Board of Education recognizes that the health and well-being of students in the DeKalb County School District are important to ensuring that all students benefit from the District’s educational programs. The Superintendent shall establish a Student Health Services Unit staffed by licensed health care professionals, including school nurses, where practical or required with the goal of ensuring the health and well-being of the District's students in accordance with federal and state law.

  1. The Student Health Services Unit shall develop a program to include prevention, education, emergency care, and referral and management of acute and chronic health conditions. The Student Health Services Unit is not intended to replace parental responsibility and medical and healthcare of the individual student remains the responsibility of the student’s parent or legal guardian.

  2. The Student Health Services Unit shall operate in accordance with all federal and state laws and regulations and shall not provide any of the services set forth in O.C.G.A. § 20-2-773.

  3. Standard first aid procedures shall be followed for students with illnesses or injuries, and the student's parent or guardian shall be notified in the case of an illness requiring medical intervention or treatment. In the event of a life threatening or serious injury or an acute or sudden illness, medical aid shall be obtained for the student on an emergency basis. The DeKalb County School District’s Infectious Disease Protocol will be followed at all times, as governed by regulation JGCC-R.The Student Health Services Unit shall obtain the manual Common Communicable Diseases of Children from the DeKalb County Board of Health and make the manual readily available in the schools at all times.
