Field Trips and Excursions

A field trip is defined as a planned educational experience away from the school campus at any time of day directly related to and correlated with a particular unit of study or a specialized function. The field trip must support the instructional programs of DeKalb County School District. All field trips should be carefully planned to ensure beneficial learning experiences, adequate supervision of students and availability of transportation. Field trips may be local (within 75 miles), in-state, out of state or international. The administrative regulation specifies the level of approval needed for each type of field trip.

Students are required to present a signed parent/legal guardian permission form, release and any other applicable form to the school before participating in a field trip and must observe the same rules of behavior outlined in the Code of Student Conduct ~ Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. No student shall be barred because of lack of funds from participating in trips planned as part of the general instructional program during the school day.

This policy applies to all school-sponsored field trips. Trips sponsored by District level departments shall follow District guidelines related to those trips. Non-school sponsored field trips, where the school is involved in any aspect of the field trip, should also follow this policy and any applicable administrative regulation. Under the direction of the Superintendent, appropriate staff members shall develop and maintain the administrative procedures necessary to implement this policy.
