The DeKalb County Board of Education will strive to ensure that all students in kindergarten through grade 12 have quality programs of instruction that comply with federal and state requirements.
- Elementary Schools
The program of instruction in kindergarten through grade five shall include the following subjects:
English/ Language Arts
Mathematics
Social Studies
Science
Health and Physical Education
Music and Visual Art
The program for the elementary grades may include other subjects which are required to meet the needs of individual students and supplementary activities for the development of citizenship and self-expression. The completion of the program for kindergarten through grade five shall be a prerequisite to registration for the sixth grade.
- Secondary Schools (Middle and Senior High Schools)
The secondary school program of instruction encompasses middle and senior high schools. In grades six through eight the subjects offered shall include the following subjects:
English/ Language Arts
Reading
Fine Arts
World Languages
Health
Mathematics
Physical Education
Science
Social Studies
Career Technology Education
For students who enter the ninth grade in the 2008-2009 school year and thereafter, a minimum of 24 units in grades nine through twelve must be completed satisfactorily in order to meet the requirements for graduation. The program of instruction offered in grades nine through twelve shall include, as a minimum, the following subjects:

*Students are required to select elective courses based on the area of concentration with a minimum of three (3) units within the area of Career Technology or a minimum of three (3) units within the area of Humanities. Career Technology units must be in one of the following areas: Business Education, Family and Consumer Science, Technology Education, Technology and Industry or JROTC. Humanities include the following areas: World Languages, ESOL, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, English/ Language Arts and Social Studies.
