MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS
To improve mathematics curriculum opportunities for all students who attend a DeKalb County School, the district will provide standards-based, hands-on mathematics instruction to all students, K - 12. The following are curriculum requirements for all students, effective beginning with the 2011-2012 school year:
Elementary School (Kindergarten through Fifth Grade)
- A mathematics program, enhanced by a reading improvement strategy, will be established as the curriculum for teaching of mathematics for all students in grades kindergarten through five.
Middle School (Grades Six through Eight)
- All sixth grade students will be required to take Math 6 or Accelerated Math 6/7.
- All seventh grade students will be required to take Math 7 or Accelerated Math 7/8.
- All eighth grade students will be required to take Math 8, Accelerated Math I, or Accelerated GPS Algebra/ Geometry. Students who pass Accelerated Math I or Accelerated GPS Algebra/ Geometry will earn a Carnegie Unit towards high school graduation.
High School (Grades Nine through Twelve)
- Students will take four credits of mathematics instruction in grades 9-12. To meet this requirement, students will participate in higher level mathematics courses as follows:
- In the 9th grade, students will be required to take Math I, GPS Algebra, Accelerated Mathematics I, Accelerated GPS Algebra/Geometry, Accelerated Mathematics II, or Accelerated GPS Geometry/Advanced Algebra.
- In the 10th grade, students will be required to take Mathematics II, GPS Geometry, Accelerated Mathematics II, Accelerated GPS Geometry/Advanced Algebra, Accelerated Mathematics III, or Accelerated GPS Pre-Calculus.
- In the 11th grade, students will be required to take Mathematics III, GPS Advanced Algebra, Accelerated Mathematics III, Accelerated GPS Pre-Calculus, Mathematics IV, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate courses, or Dual Enrollment courses.
- In the 12th grade, students will be required to take Mathematics IV, GPS Pre-Calculus, Advanced Mathematical Decision Making, Mathematics of Industry and Government, Mathematics of Finance, History of Mathematics, Multivariable Calculus, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate courses, or Dual Enrollment courses.
- Mathematics Support I, Mathematics Support II, and Mathematics Support III may count as core credit or elective credit for students who entered high school in 2008-2009, 2009-2010 or 2010-2011.
The administration shall provide support as needed for student success in mathematics. Support will include ensuring equitable access to programs and services as needed for students to successfully complete the curriculum requirements. (e.g., Four mathematics courses are required for high school graduation. Students who do not currently have access to the program or course in their high schools will be offered those services in the future and, in the interim, through other options such as distance learning.)
Also, the administration and other staff will identify students who require special support (i.e., test scores below grade level) and provide access to acceleration through programs such as summer school, extended day, and so on for more time on task as part of a safety net to ensure success for all students.
