Board Policy GAMA: Drug-Free Workplace

GAMA · Policy · Last revised 09/10/2013 · Last reviewed 09/10/2013 · Adopted 01/01/1900

The DeKalb County Board of Education (Board) recognizes that its employees are the DeKalb County School District’s (District) most valuable resource, and for that reason, their health and safety are of paramount concern. The Board recognizes that a drug-free work force encourages productivity and promotes the accomplishment of the District’s mission and goals.

Because substance abuse, at work or away from work, can seriously endanger the safety of employees and render them incapable of supplying top quality service, the District shall maintain a program to detect users and remove abusers of alcohol, drugs, or other controlled substances. This program shall include drug and alcohol testing of employees reasonably suspected of reporting to work under the influence of such substances and employees involved in workplace accidents and or who are injured on the job.

In accordance with the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989 and Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Georgia Drug-Free Public Work Force Act of 1990, it is unlawful to manufacture, distribute, dispense, possess, or use alcohol or a controlled substance, marijuana, or dangerous drug in the workplace at any time, by any school district employee. Drug related offenses shall result in discipline as prescribed in the administrative regulation to this policy. . The Superintendent or his/her designee is responsible for establishing and maintaining administrative regulation(s) to meet the requirements of this policy, state and federal law.
