Summer Internship Program

The DeKalb County School System Summer Internship Program shall be open to applicants who are between the ages of seventeen (17) and twenty four (24) and who are either high school seniors graduating in the current academic year or currently enrolled (part-time or full-time) undergraduate college students (at accredited two year or four year learning institutions). Approximately sixty (60) intern positions may be available each summer. Any increase in the number of interns that may be hired shall be approved in writing by the Superintendent. Current employees of DeKalb County School System and members of their immediate family may not apply for or participate in the Summer Internship Program. As used in this policy, the term “immediate family” means a spouse, child, sibling, or parent, or the spouse of a child, sibling, or parent.

Summer intern positions will consist of clerical and helper positions. Clerical positions will be based in or at office locations. Helper positions will not be based in or at office locations and will be assigned to various locations. These positions will consist of custodial, landscaping, mechanical maintenance, general maintenance, and warehousing positions.

All available summer intern positions will be posted on the PATS website by mid-March and remain posted “Until Filled.” Each applicant must provide three (3) personal, professional or academic references. Letters of recommendation may be accepted but they must be specific to the applicant and his/her application for the DCSS Summer Internship Program. The selection of all interns for the program shall be made by no later than the end of April. The appropriate Staffing Administrator at the district office will contact all selected interns and provide them with a date to report to the county office and instructions on the registration process.

A mandatory orientation of all interns shall be held prior to the start of employment as a summer intern. Each intern shall be assigned to a department and will be assigned a direct supervisor. Summer interns must be fingerprinted and display a school system badge at all times while at the workplace. Summer interns must adhere to Georgia State Law and board policies regarding conduct and/or behavior on school property and/or with or around school children.

The hourly rate of pay for all interns shall be as follows:

Year 1 and (Consecutive) Year 2 Summer Interns: -- $10.00

Consecutive Year 3 and Consecutive Year 4 Summer Interns: -- $12.00

An individual may not participate in the Summer Internship Program more than four (4) times.

The internship program, for any intern, shall not exceed a ten (10) week time period and in no circumstance extend past the fifteenth of August without prior approval from the Superintendent or his designee. Overtime to be worked by an intern must be pre-approved by the Superintendent or his designee.
