Coach Napolean B. Cobb Day

                                      Coach Napolean B. Cobb Day
WHEREAS:          DeKalb County Board of Education and the DeKalb County School District celebrates the life of
                  esteemed coach Mr. Napoleon B. Cobb; and

WHEREAS:          Mr. Napoleon B. Cobb, or Coach Cobb, as he was affectionally called, coached for over 40 years
                  in the state of Georgia. Thirty of those years were with the DeKalb County School district. Coach
                  Cobb coached at Gordon High School (Formerly McNair High School) and Southwest DeKalb High
                  School. Coach Cobb retired from coaching in 2015 with a state championship after the Southwest
                  DeKalb High School Boys’ track team won the Class AAAAA state title; and

WHEREAS:          That same year, Coach Cobb was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. He was
                  recognized by the NCAA as the only coach in NCAA history to have three track athletes run together
                  on the state championship team and then compete and graduate at the same time from the same
                  university; and

WHEREAS:          Coach Cobb was recognized as the first high school coach to have two former athletes who were
                  teammates in high school to earn Olympic medals in the same Olympics games; and

WHEREAS:          Coach Cobb graduated from Henry McNeal Turner High School in Atlanta and Tennessee State
                  University. After graduating from Tennessee State University, Coach Cobb began his coaching and
                  teaching career. Coach Cobb will be remembered for his tireless dedication to the District and the
                  positive impact he made in the lives of our students; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the DeKalb County School District proclaims February 12, 2024, as Coach
Napolean B. Cobb Day in honor of his memory and in recognition of his decades of service to the DeKalb County School
District; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the DeKalb County School Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Devon Q.
Horton, on behalf of the DeKalb County School District, do hereby acknowledge the outstanding career of Mr. Napolean
B. Cobb, “Coach Cobb,” for his dedication and service to the DeKalb County School District.
